The Trip

Ski Austria

Situated just northwest of Innsbruck and adjacent to the German–Bavarian border, the beautiful Austrian village of Weidach in the Leutasch valley will be our base for this 8-day cross-country ski tour. This huge, broad, flat valley surrounded by towering, craggy mountains offers some of the best cross-country skiing anywhere.

There are well over 150 miles of well-marked and tracked ski trails for both skating and classic, from beginners to experts, plus many more miles of ski trails wending through the beautiful valley. Leutasch offers a classic tranquil winter setting with Tyrolean farmhouses, rich forests and beautiful alpine scenery as the majestic Hohe Munde watches over the valley below.

Skiers can choose to ski in a group or on their own as the well marked and beautifully groomed loops allow for skiers to set their own pace. Leisurely skiers may want to stop at one of the many restaurants for a coffee and strudel and more advanced skiers may want to ski on the challenging 25 kilometer Olympia Loop and then stop for a strudel!

The Leutaschtal is unique in that it is a primarily a ski touring area. Though there are two ski lifts for downhill skiers, 99% of the valley is only for ski touring. As a result the valley remains rural, peaceful and quiet.

Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome dinner. Independent travel to the hotel in Obern, about 30 minutes by taxi from the Innsbruck Airport.

Days 2 & 3: Two mornings during the week there will be short clinic or mini lessons, followed by a guided ski.

Day 4: Free/Rest day. This is an opportunity to rest sore muscles, venture into Innsbruck, or maybe take advantage of some of the downhill skiing possibilities in the area.

Day 5: A more challenging ski will take us up the Gaistal Valley to the Gaistal Alm (conditions permitting). Though an up hill climb on the way there the return is quite easy as we glide back down hill to our hotel.

Day 6: Today will head back down the valley skiing through the hamlets of the Leutasch Valley, Klamm, Obern, Kirkplatzl, and Plaik, then enter the rich forests of the Hochmoos.

Day 7: Skiing beneath the towering Hohe Munde (8,800') we will ski the Buchen Loipe (loop), which brings us out to the high plateau above the Inn Valley.

Day 8: The trip will end at the hotel on the morning of the last day.
